The Way of Unknowing – Faith Beyond Belief

“For now we see through a glass, darkly…” – 1 Corinthians 13:12

There comes a point in every sincere journey where certainty begins to feel too small. The answers that once satisfied fall silent. The maps begin to blur. It is not a loss of faith—it is the deepening of it.

This is the Way of Unknowing.

It is the sacred threshold where belief gives way to mystery, where knowing gives way to being. It is where you stop trying to contain God with your mind and begin to meet God with your soul. It is not abandonment. It is surrender.

And it is holy.

Letting Go of the Idol of Certainty

Modern religion often equates faith with having the right answers. But the mystics teach that true faith is not clinging to certainty—it is resting in trust. Not because you understand God, but because you know God in your depths.

Unknowing is not confusion. It is clarity that has let go of control.

The great cloud of unknowing, as the medieval Christian mystic described it, is not a place of absence—it is where all thought falls silent so that Presence may arise.

The Womb of Mystery

God is not an object to be grasped, but a Presence to be entered. As long as we demand clarity, we stay on the surface. But when we consent to unknowing, we sink into the womb of the Divine—where something new can be born.

It is no accident that so many biblical revelations happen in clouds, darkness, wilderness, and dreams. These are not metaphors of fear—they are landscapes of deep encounter. God hides not to punish, but to invite deeper seeking.

The spiritual path does not move from darkness to light—it moves from false light to true darkness, and then into Light that cannot be spoken.

A Personal Descent

I remember a time when I began to question everything I thought I believed. The stories, the doctrines, even my spiritual “identity.” It felt like unraveling. But I sensed I wasn’t falling apart—I was falling deeper.

One night, I simply said: “God, I don’t know how to pray anymore.” And I heard—not with ears, but within: “Then be still. I will pray in you.”

That silence became the most profound prayer I’ve ever known.

How to Walk the Way of Unknowing

This is not a technique, but a posture—a way of being with God without grasping, fixing, or defining.

Sacred Practice: Centering into Mystery

  1. Enter Silence: Sit in stillness. Breathe gently. Close your eyes.
  2. Release Concepts: Say inwardly, “I let go of needing to understand.” Repeat slowly.
  3. Rest in Presence: Let the silence hold you. If thoughts arise, let them drift.
  4. Trust the Cloud: Instead of resisting mystery, let it envelop you. It is not emptiness. It is fullness beyond thought.

When the Mind Lets Go, the Soul Awakens

Unknowing is not passivity—it is spaciousness. It is the inner space where the Spirit breathes freely. It is where God ceases to be a concept and becomes an experience.

We are not called to figure out the Divine—we are called to be transformed by it.

“Faith is not believing in things. It is falling into the Heart that holds all things.” – Elian Veritas

Reflection Practice

Ask gently:
“Where am I clinging to understanding out of fear?”
Then ask:
“Am I willing to trust what I cannot yet name?”

Let these questions sit in you like seeds in fertile soil. Don't rush the bloom.
