“My
sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” –
John 10:27
In a world saturated with noise, speed, and endless
notifications, the greatest spiritual act might be this: to listen. Not just to
words, but to the still small voice—that subtle, sacred whisper that
speaks not to the ears, but to the heart.
This voice doesn’t argue or shout. It doesn’t demand or
manipulate. It waits patiently, like a gentle breeze after a storm. To hear
it, we must learn the art of deep listening—where presence becomes the bridge
between our inner being and divine guidance.
Rediscovering Sacred Silence
We often think of prayer as speaking, petitioning, or
proclaiming. But there is a deeper prayer—the prayer of listening. The voice of
the Divine is not always found in religious texts or sermons. Sometimes it
arrives in the hush between breaths, in the soft nudge to call a friend, to
forgive, to pause.
Jesus often withdrew to lonely places to pray—not to
escape, but to listen. He taught from silence, not just scripture. The desert,
the mountaintop, the garden—these weren’t just backdrops. They were listening
chambers.
What Is the Still Small Voice?
This phrase comes from 1 Kings 19, when the prophet Elijah
was seeking God. There was wind, earthquake, and fire—but the Lord was in none
of them. Then came a still small voice. That’s where God was.
This voice isn’t always verbal. It may come as:
- A
gut feeling of peace or dis-ease
- A
phrase that repeats gently in your mind
- An
image that emerges while in contemplation
- A
sense of knowing that rises from within
The still small voice is the voice of the I AM within. It
aligns us with Truth—not with fear, not with ego, but with clarity and
compassion.
A Personal Moment of Listening
There was a time in my life when I stood at a
crossroads—two paths, both uncertain. I sought counsel, weighed options, prayed
aloud. But the more I talked, the less clear I became. So I stopped. I sat in
silence each morning, not to get answers, but just to be still.
After several days, something simple came—not as a command,
but as a gentle pull: “Choose peace.” Not the easier path. Not the one
others preferred. Just the one that brought peace in my chest. That quiet
clarity changed the direction of my life.
This is the wisdom of the inner voice. It does not always
offer reasons—it offers resonance. When you listen with your soul, you begin to
recognize it.
Practicing the Art of Listening
Like any sacred art, listening must be cultivated. It is
not about trying harder, but about becoming softer.
Daily Practice:
- Set
a Space: Find a quiet place where you won’t be
disturbed. Light a candle if it helps.
- Breathe
and Center: Take 3 slow breaths. Let go of needing to
“achieve” anything.
- Ask
Simply: “Spirit, what would you have me know
today?” Then listen. Don’t try to hear. Just be open.
- Receive
in Silence: Notice what arises—a word, image,
emotion, or stillness.
- Write
It Down: Journal anything you felt or sensed,
without judgment.
Over time, you will recognize the difference between ego
noise and soul voice. One demands. The other invites.
“The
still small voice does not speak in chaos, but calls you gently from the
silence within.”
